This album links to early Vixen in two ways. Matt Sorum was the drummer for Jeff Paris at one time. And Jeff - of course - wrote a few big hits for Vixen, so that’s link #1.
Second there’s this voice… Pamme sounds a lot like Janet Gardner so there’s another one. (She sounds a bit like Carol Decker (T’Pau) at times as well, but mentioning that would ruin my story ;-))
Matt Sorum isn’t the only big name on the album, by the way. Robin McAuley does the background vocals on two songs: The Curtain and Forgiveness. Not that you really hear it’s him, but it’s always nice to have a name like that on your debut album, isn’t it?
If you – because of the links to Vixen - think The Road is this all-girl band’s missing third melodic album, you’re wrong. Pamme and Co. have gone to work in a much more subdued way.
The Road is very ballad heavy and it takes until track 5 before the band really rocks out. Strange Premonition is one of only 4 real rockers on the album, which is a bit of a pity as it takes the pace out of the album.
The rest of the songs are ballads or semi-ballads and very good ones, I might add. Pamme’s voice really fits this kind of material. Only problem is that her voice is a bit low in the mix. A shame, I think, as it’s very good.
Despite that The Road has become a very enjoyable album that I can recommend to all devotees of female fronted rock bands.
Haven doesn’t leave the same impression as Heart or Vixen yet, but I’m convinced it won’t take long before they can act in the same league. All the signs are there...
